A Testimonial From “Ladies of a Certain Age”
We are two women in our 60's who have been active all our lives and have been blessed with good health. We have enjoyed world-wide travels involving hiking, biking, canoeing, rafting, and even some moderate mountain climbing.
A couple years ago, just in passing, we checked our calendars and were astonished to find that somehow, while we were busy going about our daily lives, many years had flown past. How did we get this old, this fast? How long would we be able to keep up our previously taken-for-granted levels of physical capacities?
Well, as getting older was better than the alternative, it looked as though we would have to admit to our age and the fact that weight control, flexibility, strength, and general physical conditioning would no longer be givens, but rather goals to be attained by will and work.
But never having had the highly touted endorphin rush to push us gleefully out the door for that predawn jog, (read: we hate exercise for exercise's sake) we decided to find someone to push (read: shame) us into good exercise habits.
And we were fortunate indeed to become acquainted to Mr. Shawn Hunter (“such a nice young man”).
Shawn combines a warm sense of humor with gentle encouragement. He has had a keen eye for our physical abilities and limitations, not only in general, but during any particular session and uses his gift for flexibility in tailoring each session to those realities. He does not have a “one program fits all” mentality but neither does he pander to our age at any level. We sweat, we moan and groan, but as it stands, we are in better shape, more flexible, and stronger than we have been in years.
So even though we occasional gripe and complain, “We really don't want to be here today”, we're usually glad that we managed to complete our hour of disciplined activity and conversation with this kind mentor.
So, to other “ladies of a certain age”, we say, “If you are interested in starting an exercise program and have your physician's approval, Shawn knows how to determine your safe starting line, to judge your appropriate pace, and to work creatively with you in reaching your own predetermined finish line of health and fitness.”
